Aayatiin Foundation in collaboration with London Somali Development Partnership (LSDP) member organisations and partners are organising 2nd Somali Week, an annual event, as a part of refugee week.
Somalis are one of the largest single ethnicity in London Borough of Lambeth. Somali Week will promote the success stories like business enterprenours, other achievements and also highlight some of the problems that the community is facing such as underachievement, crime, health, housing, khat and worklessness.
The main strategic objectives of Somali Week are:
- To raise the profile of the Somali community in the borough;
- To demonstrate to other communities the potentials of the community;
- To demonstrate Somali community’s achievements, the challenges and the opportunities;
- To explore the strategic direction of the community;
- To provide an opportunity to show case its fascinating culture.
The programme for the week will be an interesting one, and will include:
· 3rd Somali Education Conference: Reflecting realities of reaching-out refugees. Awards: Partnership, Volunteering, Community Champions, Entrepreneurship, Distinguished Services, Women & Youth categories
· Commemorating and celebrating the 48th anniversary of Somali independence on 1st July 1960 (Awards: Partnership, Volunteering, Community Support, Entrepreneurship, Distinguished Services, Women & Youth categories)
· Grand exhibition on Somali Expo (food, culture activities, artefacts & history) of Somali communities & voluntary organisations and businesses;

Though the major activities take place in Lambeth, it is important that other community organisations across Southwest London will be involved in this week and will organise variety of their own activities in their neighbouring boroughs.
